Chicago Municipal Records Guide

The majority of the collection is from a City of Chicago radio series called "Our City". Series I features transcriptions of radio broadcasts during the 1930s. These speeches describe the functions of various departments and positions within the City of Chicago, as told by the administrators themselves.

City of Chicago TV offers a broadcast forum for the City of Chicago to highlight public and cultural events, the operations of, and, most importantly, the services that City departments and its sister agencies offer to residents.

Includes reporters' copy and supporting subject materials of the City News Bureau of Chicago news agency, filed from four beat locations: Federal Court, Cook County Civil Court, Cook County Criminal Court, and Chicago City Hall.

The collection contains bulletins, pamphlets, reports, and newspaper clippings dating from 1918 until 1960. The materials pertain to Chicago municipal government, salaries of government workers and to education.

Includes typed transcripts of interviews conducted by Betty Brown Chappell (Ph.D. candidate, University of Chicago) with notable Chicago aldermen and other public officials relating to her dissertation topic, "The Black Movement Model of Mayoral Leadership."

The Bob Crawford audio archive consists of roughly a hundred tapes of interviews, radio programs and City Council proceedings collected by Crawford from 1970-2000. The tapes have been digitized.

Includes newspaper clippings and other papers of Harry Golden, Jr., a Chicago journalist. Newspaper clippings consist mainly of articles Golden wrote as City Hall correspondent for the Chicago Sun-Times. Also present are materials relating to Chicago politics, including a reel-to-reel audio tape of Mayor Richard J. Daley, travel itineraries for Mayor Harold Washington's 1985 junkets to Asia and Israel, Mayor Washington's 1987 inaugural program, City of Chicago directories, magazine articles, and Chicago political campaign memorabilia, including pens, shopping bags, and posters.

Documentary films about Chicago politics, with emphasis on the mayoral elections of 1983 and 1987 and the life and career of Mayor Harold Washington, are available from the Bill Stamets Collection on the Chicago Film Archives web site. These films represent a portion of the Bill Stamets Collection concerning politics and government.
